History of Breast Augmentation

Welcome to our website. Here you will find information concerning breast augmentation.

A prosthesis or breast implant alters the shape and size of a woman's breasts. This procedure is known as breast augmentation, breast enlargement, mammoplasty enlargement, augmentation mammoplasty or the common slang term boob job. A breast augmentation is done for cosmetic reasons, to reconstruct the breast.

Implants have been used since as far back as 1895 to augment the size and shape of omen's breasts. In the early to mid-1900s, other substances were tried including ivory, glass balls, ground rubber and other strange prostheses. Even various creams and medications have been used in attempts to increase bust size.

Currently the two primary types of breast implants are saline-filled and silicone-gel-filled. Saline implants have a silicone elastomer shell filled with sterile saline liquid. Silicone gel implants have a silicone shell filled with a viscous silicon gel. Some women with silicone implants experienced hardening of the breasts. If leakage occurs with silicon implants, generally it can severely affect their health requiring surgery. Some were so severe that a mastectomy was required for treatment. Complications have required medical treatment for up to 30 years after this type of injection.

Usually patients are younger, healthier, from a higher socio-economic status than the general population that seek breast augmentation. They are often married with children. Studies suggest women who undergo breast implants have low self esteem, low self confidence and have higher prevalence's of depression as compared to the general population.

Post-operative surveys have reported a change of these characteristic shortcomings due to the feeling of an increase of confidence with breast augmentation. Overall, most patients report being satisfied long-term with their implants even if re-operation is required for complications or aesthetic reasons.
